This wonderfully restored heritage building is now a contemporary art gallery in the west end of Fremantle showing diverse and changing exhibitions of West Australian art.
Fremantle Arts Centre
Fremantle Arts Centre is one of Western Australia's most dynamic arts organisations running a diverse cultural program including exhibitions of contemporary visual arts, creative courses, workshops free courtyard music on Sundays throughout the summer months. Fremantle Arts Centre is housed in the southern wing of the magnificent neo-gothic building constructed by convicts between 1860 -90 as the first Asylum.
Fremantle History Museum
The Fremantle History Museum is one of Fremantle's most significant landmarks. Built by the convicts in the early 1860's to house the 'insane' it was known as the asylum.
The Museum now showcases the social history and heritage of Fremantle and Western Australia. A range of changing exhibitions are on offer exploring various aspects of Western Australian history. There are major displays on the post-war immigration boom and the building itself. The building is rumoured to have a resident ghost.
